Behavioural Activation

Behavioural Activation is a psychotherapy approach in Knebel Knotes.

  • Approach aimed at breaking the cycle of inactivity and negativity by increasing engagement in activities that are associated with pleasure and positive reinforcement.
  • Rationale: low mood and negativity often lead to inactivity and withdrawal which perpetuates feelings of isolation, sadness and lack of accomplishment.
  • By increasing exposure to positive activities, BA seeks to increase motivation, improve mood and overall quality of life.
  • Target activities that are aligned with patient’s values/interests to create sense of accomplishment and purpose
  • Uses techniques such as activity scheduling and tracking how they feel before and after an activity to assess its impact (feeling of pleasure and mastery)
  • Work progressively to optimize pleasurable activities; engagement in valued activities; opportunities to derive pleasure; sense of achievement or mastery
